RICHMOND, Va. (AP) Jay Gavin scored 20 points, Larry Sanders 17 and Virginia Commonwealth never trailed in an 82-69 upset of No. 17 Oklahoma on Saturday night.

The victory spoiled the return of Oklahoma coach Jeff Capel, who used to coach the Rams.

Trailing by one early on, the Rams (2-1) used a 20-8 spurt to take control of the game. VCU hit six straight 3-pointers during the run, including two by Gavin.

Kentucky tightens 'D' in rout of Rider

LEXINGTON, Ky. (AP) Kentucky center DeMarcus Cousins saw Rider's Brandon Penn pull up from well behind the 3-point line and stretched every last inch of his 6-foot-11 frame in an effort to get a hand on the ball.

Guarding an opponent 22 feet from the basket isn't something Cousins does often. And he plowed into Penn as the ball clanged off the rim, but Cousins' effort perhaps the surest sign that Kentucky coach John Calipari's message to his team that it needed to get serious about defense had come through loud and clear. Read More...

No. 9 Duke hits 18 3s in 104-67 romp

DURHAM, N.C. (AP) Duke doesn't have many guards. The ninth-ranked Blue Devils sure haven't lost their long-range touch.

No. 19 Hoyas cruise past Savannah State

SAVANNAH, Ga. (AP) Sophomore guard Jason Clark scored a career-high 14 points in Georgetown's easy win over Savannah State on Saturday. Hoyas coach John Thompson III called it "irrelevant."

That's because Thompson figures this is really just the beginning for Clark. If he's right, this could be a very successful season for the No. 19 Hoyas, who rolled to a 63-44 win. Read More...

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) Rick Pitino and the 20th-ranked Louisville Cardinals have a lot to work on and little time to do it.

Edgar Sosa scored 13 of his 16 points in the first half and No. 20 Louisville beat East Tennessee State 69-56 on Saturday. Read More...

Syracuse hands No. 6 Heels first loss

NEW YORK (AP) Jim Boeheim has always made a point of telling the media not to get too caught up in runs because basketball, especially on the college level, is a game of runs.

He could only smile as he was asked about Syracuse's 22-1 run to open the second half of an 87-71 victory over No. 6 North Carolina on Friday night in the championship game of the 2K Sports Classic. Read More...

Turner, No. 15 Ohio St. beat No. 13 Cal

NEW YORK (AP) Ohio State's two-game visit to Madison Square Garden was inconsistent to say the least. The Buckeyes' best player, however, has been consistent all season.

Evan Turner had 26 points and 14 rebounds, his fourth double-double in as many games, and No. 15 Ohio State beat No. 13 California 76-70 on Friday night in the third-place game of the 2K Sports Classic. Read More...

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico (AP) Corey Fisher claims he never got nervous after No. 5 Villanova nearly gave up an 18-point lead to Dayton in the second half.

It showed at the free-throw line. Read More...

EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) Even though No. 2 Michigan State wasn't at its best, it found a way to win easily at home.

Pondexter's 30 and 15 lift Washington

SEATTLE (AP) Quincy Pondexter got his career high in points and rebounds. He got revenge over Adrian Oliver, his former Washington roommate who jilted him two years ago by transferring. And the Huskies got the win.

The only thing Pondexter didn't get was his rent back. Read More...
